Announcing, at long last, my new collection of short stories, poems & seasonal notes called The Venus Year!
I will let this sumptuous book trailer—created with the film and editing support of my brilliant cousin Eva Victor and the music composition and sound design of my brother Simon Linsteadt— speak for itself, and the book’s preface, which I’ve shared below in both English and its accompanying Greek translation.
Right now, I am offering fifteen very special editions as part of my pre-order sales…. Not only will these editions be signed, they will also include a bespoke, hand-painted watercolor card that can be used as a bookmark or as a decoration. Each card will be unique, and made for you with a combination of intuitive motifs or images from the book, and one custom request put in by you, the recipient, for an animal, plant, symbol, etc. that you would like to be incorporated!
These cards will be on watercolor stock, roughly 8 x 6 inches. Below is just an example of the overall feeling you might expect… not exact details!
You can pre-order one of these very special watercolor editions here, or if you would prefer simply one of my first 300 signed copies, those are available here, and going fast! All books will be shipped in early to mid December.
Read on for the book’s first pages, in both English & Greek, as well as a glimpse of the back cover.
Preface
What follows in this book are the pieces of what I call a Venus year—the 19-month cycle that Venus makes around the earth in her transformation from morning star to evening star and back again—between October of 2018 and June of 2020 when everything in my life changed, irrevocably.
Some say the Sumerian myth of the goddess Inanna’s descent into the underworld and ascent out of it again riding a crescent moon-boat is a map of Venus’s celestial cycle. As the story goes, every month on her way down Inanna is stripped of one of her royal garments or sacred vestments. And every month on her way up she is re-dressed. In between she dies, hangs on a hook in the underworld, and is resurrected. In the same manner, Venus is morning star in the east for roughly seven months and evening star in the west for roughly seven months, with periods on either side where she is not visible to the naked eye as she makes her orbital transition between phases.
I didn’t realize that this journey of mine mapped onto Venus’s movements until near the end of one of her cycles, at which point the pattern of this book began to show itself to me from the growing body of work I had been writing since October of 2018. Then, the parallels were both uncanny and illuminating.
For it was surely a year of devastation, and also of unfathomable gifts. This year that brought me to the shore of myself. Half of the time I was living on the Greek island of Crete. The other half I was home in California where I was born, on the tectonic island of the Point Reyes Peninsula, which is the ancestral land of the Coast Miwok people. I made a few short trips to other islands—Vancouver Island, England, the Hebrides—but the vast majority of my days were spent between these two beloved lands.
And so I’ve gathered the pieces of my Venus year here in the manner of bees bringing pollen and nectar back to the hive—the κυψέλη (kypseli) in Greek. This word is sometimes used in modern Greek to refer to a broadcast signal, a message received invisibly through the air. While the metaphor in this case is contemporary, the concept of the hive as a place that received not only bees and their nectars and pollens, but also messages and signals, is ancient. Messages from sun, moon, stars and winds, from the dead, messages from the yet-to-be-born, messages from ancestors and gods, the mythic utterances of birds and trees and human dreams—all were thought to be held and received by the hive. As far back as pre-Hellenic Crete, and likely much further, bees were thought to ferry the souls of the newly born and the newly dead back and forth between realms. And across Europe into the 20th century, the folk tradition of “telling the bees” persisted among peasant peoples and their hives—the practice of going to the bees with any major family news from deaths to births, marriages to love affairs, and all manner of dramas and dreams.
In this spirit—of both the bee bringing back nectar and mythic utterance, and the beekeeper telling her loves and losses to the hive—I’ve gathered together my seasonal, ecological notes from each month’s bloomings and fruitings on the land where I was living, accompanied by the poems and short stories I wrote during each month. Together, the ecological and the mythic informed my psyche’s own deaths, blooms and fruits.
Woven into one whole, these pieces of earth, star and myth spell the hive that has been both my grief house and my birthing floor.
A Note on the Translation
Because so much of what happened to me during this Venus year happened in Greek—within the arms of this intricate, ancient, complex, musical language, this language that held, upended, and began to reweave me—it was essential to me that the book be in Greek as well as English. Perhaps Crete knew this from the beginning, before I even began to write it, because on my very first evening in the village that would become my home for close to a year, a woman who I had only just met looked at me and said, “You have to meet Vicky.” Vicky Chatzopoulou, a translator and teacher with maternal roots in Rethymno, who quickly became a dear friend and the most brilliant translator I could have hoped for. She is a midwife of words, bringing the English through into Greek with incredible skill, care, and a powerful instinct for the feminine wild that resides in Crete’s stones and trees and waters.
For those of you who can’t read in Greek, let these letters and words rest nevertheless between the English chapters like a mysterious harvest that, even without understanding it, brings the beautiful shape of this land to your heart. For those of you who can’t read in English, may the English text beside the Greek nevertheless be a map for you of my own native inheritance, my mother-tongue.
A Note from the Translator Vicky Chatzopoulou
About the translation, from the other side—I met Sylvia just like she narrated it, via this mutual friend who told me in the street one day years ago, “You must meet Sylvia.” She was right, and I thank her for that. The warm relationship that started then is still alive and continues to be enriched along the way.
Sylvia’s text presents a huge linguistic challenge. It is dry and poetic at the same time. It has a complex simplicity, if such a term can be coined. Its content, on the other hand, its spirit, fully aligns with my reading of the world—both the external and the internal one—and this has been a great advantage. This twain course is present throughout the text, in the interplay between the deeply personal and the mythical, the cosmic, within a framework set by nature herself and her produce (with the small pieces at the start of every month).
I hope to have been successful in my role as midwife, as Sylvia called me (moving me deeply), in the birth of her voice into the Greek language. This translation has been one of the most enjoyable I’ve worked on, and I wish to thank her for the trust she has shown me. I am also overjoyed with the bilingual edition of this exquisite text.
Whichever language you choose to read—and some may choose both— I wish you to let go and dive deep into the multitude of worlds the narration opens up for us.
Will you have an audiobook for this one?
I love the tender, beautiful way you are introducing this work into the world. Eva's video evoking this liminal space between personal and mythical that Vicky gives voice to. The way you show us the weaving of the threads between you and Venus and Crete and California and Eva and Vicky. And how all of these threads together illuminate the collaborative nature of the relationship between soul and source. The intentionality that shines through how you do all of your work is such a gorgeous gift. Thank you, Sylvia.
