I love this story too... I play the tune on my fiddle :)
As I read your words I’m sitting in the home where I was born on the other side of the continent from where I now live, just beyond the kitchen where my mother has the 9 lessons and carols service from Oxford blasting on the radio, and outside a goose has loosened himself from where he was frozen in the pond, and the juxtaposition of reading this story and hearing Christ stories in the background is just really making me smile right now.
Thank you for this beautiful story recounting, and those paintings are amazing... a merry returning of the light time to you
I'd love to hear this on the fiddle, how wonderful Trilby. And, that image of the goose in the frozen pond, the carols service, and Tam Lin going all at once made me smile too. Blessings on your Yule season x
I actually wrote this comment before I listened to your lovely rendition. The fiddle tune called tam Lin is entirely different. And full of intensity that suits the story well I think.... I’ll see if I can find a version to put on the comments thread here.
Thank you for this Trilby! Yes, as mentioned in the essay above, the melody I used followed after the tradition of Archie Fisher, who set the song to the melody of another Child Ballad, Willie of Winsbury. This is a beautiful reel, and yes I agree it suits the intensity of the story!
Sylvia, thank you (and your brother) for this beautiful song and story, story and song. Thank you also for gently calling attention towards the heart/soul teaching of the song (and away from the well-therapied brain) and also for your interpretations and preferences, I’m grateful to receive them.
I’ll be sharing this with my Scottish mum - Janet - who I think has lived this story, and continues to in some ways. I’m inspired to explore expanding this story, based on hers...
So so grateful for this sharing of your lovely voice - may the blessings of the season be yours!
I love this so much. Thank you, Sylvia. I have been listening on repeat since I first heard it... it is connecting me with my beloved Scottish roots. I would love it if you created more music with your brother. Your voice with his strumming is heaven, and that with your sincerity and choice of lyric is wholesome medicine.
Thank you so much for all of these words Brielle, it's a gift to know that this song has touched you in this way, and that you want to hear more! I would love to share more songs too.
What a gift! Thank you Sylvia, so much, for this beautiful feminine evocative offering. Your voice is both healing and full of heart. Sending you many blessings during this tender season.
Mirabella, thank you for these beautiful words, I'm tucking them away with true gratitude in my heart. It is a gift to be able to share what I love in this life. xx
How very beautiful! You have a lovely voice for this poignant melody and tale. Bright winter blessings to you and thank you for gifting us this tender co-creation. May Earth hold you and keep you.
Winter’s eve blessings to you dear Sylvia and to all 🕯
Thank you for this beautiful ensorcelling story-song. What a gift you and your brother created. It was so wonderful reading your lovingly stitched and sewn together piece on this tale and the deeper knowledge beneath. I’m nestling into “the language of heart and of soul”. 🧡
You have a beautiful voice and I enjoyed the context you gave for the song, especially the point on women's desire and the woman being the seeker in this story.
I wanted to learn more about this ballad, and that brought me to you, Sylvia. Thank you so much, for your music, your voice and all the passion you put into it, and the additional explanations. I listened to your song before reading the article, and I'm glad I did it that way. Because I didn't stop there, I also found the morning star woman, and that is getting me started on a whole new and unexpected path. Please keep giving voice to your stories, bringing them to libe like that. Thank you also for bringing a bit of winter to this hot summer. I'm glad my search brought me to you.
Gorgeous, and beautiful reflections which so mirror the ways I’ve been with, sat with, this story and the feelings and possibilities it’s awoken in me. Thank you!
Such medicine. Every time I listen to this, a different awareness arises. Today the words that rang out strongly for my heart, "fear him not." Thank you Sylvia.

What a lovely deep gift on this eve. Both the pure flowing musical form, and the evocative narrative coloration. mmmmm.

Yes, that's such a key point for me too about the story... it opens the whole narrative up in a new and potent way.
